Aren't grits tiny pieces of stones?
you might be thinking about gravel. They reason why its called grits,the corn is ground up. But in the old days they used stones to grind the corn. Also its gritty when raw.
looks like shit. rice is better
it may look like shit, but grits are delicious. Rice is ok. I have eaten rice for breakfast before. I love butter rice though.

Grits are ground up corn. When boiled in water the starch fron the corn make the grits creamy smooth and soft.
